Ugh, nothing like being jolted out of bed at 2:50 AM by Mother Nature’s alarm clock. That’s exactly what happened to thousands of us across the Bay Area when a 4.3 magnitude earthquake San Francisco decided to shake things up this morning.

I was dead asleep in my Mission District apartment when everything started swaying. At first, I thought maybe a massive truck was rumbling down 24th Street, but nope – definitely an earthquake. My cat bolted under the couch faster than I could even process what was happening.

The Shake Down

Turns out I wasn’t alone in my rude awakening. The quake hit east-southeast of Berkeley, and man, did people feel it. My Twitter feed exploded with “Did you feel that?!” posts within minutes. Classic Bay Area response, honestly.

BART got all cautious (which, fair enough) and slowed its trains down while they checked the tracks. Everything was back to normal by my morning commute though, so no biggie there.

The earthquake San Francisco Bay Area got hit with came from our old friend the Hayward Fault. Yeah, that one – the fault line that basically runs right under a bunch of our neighborhoods. Makes you think twice about those heavy bookshelves, doesn’t it?

What the Smart People Say

I called up my buddy who works at the USGS, and she wasn’t too worried about it. “Pretty standard stuff for us,” she said while probably rolling her eyes at my 3 AM panic text.

Apparently, over 24,000 people reported feeling this earthquake San Francisco area experienced. That’s a lot of people reaching for their phones at the same time.

The good news? Scientists say there’s only like a 0.2% chance we’ll get hit with something bigger in the next week. Those odds work for me.

Reality Check Time

Look, we all know the drill by now. Living here means accepting that the ground might randomly decide to do a little dance now and then. This morning’s earthquake San Francisco reminded me that I still don’t have my emergency kit.

My neighbor Lisa was out walking her dog when it hit. “The streetlights were swaying,” she told me over coffee this morning. “Made me realize I should probably bolt down that vast mirror in my bedroom.”

She’s not wrong. We talk about earthquake prep all the time, but how many of us actually have our stuff sorted?

Conclusion

This earthquake San Francisco shake wasn’t the “Big One” everyone’s always talking about, but it definitely got our attention. My coffee maker survived, my cat came out of hiding, and life goes on.

Still, maybe it’s time to actually put together that emergency bag I keep saying I’ll make. And maybe secure that bookshelf. And definitely charge my portable battery pack.

Anyone else planning to finally get their earthquake kit together ‌this morning? Just me? Cool.

Stay safe out there, Bay Area. Our tectonic plates aren’t done with us yet.
